South Atlantic Region News

It’s Georgia’s turn to elect the next AIA South Atlantic Region YAF Regional Director (for a 2020-21 term).  This is a very important role, serving as an advocate, liaison, and champion between the region’s emerging professionals and the regional and national AIA governing structure.  For many, this role is a launch pad for leadership at the local, state, or even national level.  Shelby Morris, currently at HKS in Atlanta, was the last Georgia architect to hold this office.

If you, or anyone you know, is interested in running for this position, please complete an application form by 5 PM on Monday, July 22nd.  The winning candidate will be elected through an online voting process, with the voting window open from August 1st to 22nd. The winning candidate will be invited to the YAF Gathering in October 2019.

You will need to be prepared to provide the following information in the application process:

  • Name, email, employer, chapter, AIA number, and phone
  • Year of first professional licensure, license number in Georgia
  • Upload a head shot, your Letter of Intent and Reasons for Interest, and resume
  • 75 word summary of the reasons for your candidacy
  • Letter of recommendation (optional)
  • Confirmation that you have read the information on Ranked Choice voting.

Region Leadership

Jane Frederick, FAIA

South Atlantic Regional Representative on the Strategic Council (AIA South Carolina)

Jane is principal at Frederick + Frederick Architects which received AIA South Carolina’s 2017 Firm Award and Southern Living magazine’s Best Renovation of 2009. The Beaufort, South Carolina firm specializes in custom residences and has earned eighteen state and local design awards. She is currently the 2019 vice president and will be serving as president of AIA in 2020.

Cheryl McAfee, FAIA

SAR Regional Representative (AIA Georgia)

Cheryl McAfee is a small business professional in the architecture field with a career spanning over 40 years. As the CEO of McAfee3 Architects, Inc., a legacy practice that was founded by her father and incorporated in 1963, she is passionate about the relevance and importance of service to the profession, membership and the communities architects serve in.

Luke McCary, AIA

SAR Regional Representative (AIA South Carolina)

Since joining the AIA, McCary has served on several committees and he has the distinction of being the youngest AIA South Carolina President in 2013, during its 100-year anniversary. While president, he implemented two AIA educational programs in Columbia with the Columbia Museum of Art: the Frank Lloyd Wright exhibit and the Kids in Architecture program. He is a senior project manager at Pond.

Walt Teague, FAIA

SAR Regional Representative (AIA North Carolina)

For over 20 years, Teague, Freyaldenhoven & Freyaldenhoven Architects & Planners, LLP have been practicing in central North Carolina. Teague is a graduate of Western Carolina and North Carolina State’s architecture programs. He has served in a number of positions on the AIA North Carolina board receiving recognition through chapter honors and elevation to the College of Fellows.
