The 16,000 square foot two story student dining facility on the Health Sciences Campus of Augusta University in Downtown Augusta, Georgia is attached to the University’s Wellness Center, offering students, employees and alumni a complete student center environment. Interior renovations and refurbishment began in the kitchen, serving line and dining areas and extend out and upward to the dining and circulation/study areas on the second floor.
Kitchen and food service areas were remodeled and updated for modern operation to include all new food service equipment and transaction processing.
The interior renovations of the dining and student lounge areas created a bistro style to the center open Atrium to complement the existing Starbucks Café on the first level. Bar height countertops were installed with power and data outlets to allow for the user to stay connected. New modern chairs gather around existing table tops resurfaced with laminate film, combining the new with existing for budget management. Laminate slat partitions and decorative acrylic panels divide the dining area from the refurbished serving line. Light wood tones accented with medium wood tones create visual interest while directing your gaze up to the new graphic wall and skylights above the dining area.
The second floor of the student dining facility transitions the student into a lounge/study space which is open and flooded with natural light. Existing lounge chairs were reupholstered and mixed in with new sofas and ottomans, offering versatile seating for individuals or group study. Adjacent to the study area is an additional dining space. Refurbished and repurposed casework offers flexibility to students and staff to heat their own food and enjoy a quieter eating environment.
The majority of the outdated terrazzo flooring throughout the first and second floors is now a combination of carpet tiles and luxury vinyl tiles integrated with the school colors. The two materials interchange seamlessly and create a single plain flooring system without producing hazards to the user.
Large wall graphics draw the eyes into the space depicting the multi-faceted studies, student life and opportunities that Augusta University offers. The graphics were strategically designed to capture the school spirit that embodies the University and to add visual interest to the spaces. Wall areas were also identified for rotating student art and sculptural displays.
