SAR Voting Process

AIA Georgia members have the privilege of electing the next Regional Director to represent the South Atlantic Region (SAR) from January 2020 to December 2022. This individual will also serve on the AIA Strategic Council. This is a rare opportunity for the elected member to gain unique experience working on AIA issues at the national, regional and local levels, and the added chance to build a national network of colleagues who will be retained for the length of a career.

AIA Georgia, representing more than 2,100 architects and associates across the state, is interested in identifying a highly qualified candidate who has broad support across the entire membership.

AIA Georgia members will be asked during voting to rank the candidates by order of preference, with “1” being their first choice, “2” their second, and so on. If at the end of voting no candidate has received 50%+ of “1” votes, then the candidate with the least number of “1” votes will be eliminated. The election panel will then look to see who the “2” choices were for those AIA members who voted for the eliminated candidate. These votes will then be added to the “1” totals for the remaining candidates, and an analysis will be done to see if any of them have reached the 50%+ threshold. This process will continue until a majority candidate is identified. This process will encourage the election of the candidate who demonstrates the broadest and deepest support across the entire state of AIA Georgia members. It all eliminates the possibility of a time-consuming runoff round and ensures that everyone’s vote counts. All candidates will be asked to agree to this process before their name is placed on the ballot.

Neil Dawson, AIA
2020-2022 SAR Regional Director Nominee

I am asking for your support by electing me to the Strategic Council of the AIA as the Georgia Representative for the South Atlantic Region. As many of you know, the Strategic Council is a relatively new organization. It was formed a few years ago to streamline the AIA Board of Directors. The Board is now focused on operations and policy, while the Strategic Council is tasked with developing long-term initiatives and planning. Some of the current issues of the Council include the Life Cycle of an Architect, Increasing the Public Valuation of Architecture, Innovative Business Models and others.

Another important role of the Strategic Council is providing a communication conduit to and from the Membership in their Region, State, and Local Chapters and the Institute. As a past President of both AIA Georgia and AIA Savannah, and as an active practitioner in Georgia for over 27 years, I have developed a tremendous network of fellow architects that I trust and respect. One of my roles on the Strategic Council will be to reach out to you, my colleagues that I serve, to solicit your input and assistance on addressing the issues that we face…

Cheryl McAfee, FAIA
2020-2022 SAR Regional Director Nominee

I am requesting your support for my candidacy to serve on the Strategic Council of the AIA as the Georgia Representative for the South Atlantic Region. The Strategic Council is a hardworking and engaging team of three (3) for the Southeast Region. The Council is tasked with “ideation/research/generative” though based activities both nationally and in our region. That said, the Council has the flexibility to focus on areas and interests beyond that of the AIA Board of Directors, and to think forward to long-term as well as immediate subjects facing the profession. Most importantly, the Council is the primary conduit for ideas, needs of the professions, and opportunities from our members to the AIA Board.

I am a small business professional with a career spanning over 40 years. As the CEO of McAfee3 Architects, Inc., a legacy practice that was founded by my father and incorporated in 1963, I am passionate about the relevance and importance of service to our profession, membership and our communities…

Theresa Ridley, AIA

During her term as President-Elect of AIA Georgia, she served as Co-Chair of the Tours Committee for the 2015 AIA National Convention. The following year she served as part of the Planning Committee for the 2016 SAR Conference in Savannah, Georgia. In 2018, Theresa was awarded the Bronze Medal for her service to advance the mission of AIA Georgia. When Theresa was the 2013 AIA Atlanta President, she established the UrbanFRONTS event. As Strategic Council Representative she would work with the AIA National Board to be a catalyst in moving forward the initiatives that AIA Georgia has brought to the forefront such as mentoring and promoting our diverse membership to become the leaders of tomorrow in the profession, encouraging women to seek architecture licensure, and recognizing the value of our Emerging Professionals.
